Keynote: What is the Value of Open Source?
Speaker: James Bottomley (Hansen Partnership, Inc.)
Measuring value is a very subjective exercise, for instance it can be philosophical (the values of the FSF four freedoms), monetary (the value of Open Source is equal to what I paid for it) or a range in between (the value of open source to my company is the cost of the software it replaces less the price of keeping it running) and so on ...
It has been said that communities are built on shared values. However, we will demonstrate for Open Source that this is incorrect: communities are in fact built on a shared appreciation of value, but the way a member of the community defines that value need have nothing in common with the way another member does it. This talk will explore these "disparate value" communities in Linux and give some tips on how to generate them, including the useful one of how to persuade your boss that he should be paying you to work more on open source. |

Keynote: The Kernel Report
Speaker: Jonathan Corbet (LWN.net)
The Linux kernel is at the core of any Linux system; the performance and capabilities of the kernel will, in the end, place an upper bound on what the system as a whole can do. This talk will review recent events in the kernel development community, discuss the current state of the kernel and the challenges it faces, and look forward to how the kernel may address those challenges. Attendees of any technical ability should gain a better understanding of how the kernel got to its current state and what can be expected in the near future. |
