June 6 at Munich University
Linear Algebra Day with Professor Gilbert Strang (MIT)
Faculty for Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Munich
Archived talks from Linear Algebra Day at the University of Munich are here. The talks comprise a video and the presentation slides, which are displayed in sync with the talk. To view a talk in the archive, all you need is a Java-capable Web browser.
Professor Strang won the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America in 2006. He will be holding two talks entitled "Starting with Two Matrices" and "The Many Applications of Linear Algebra". Three further talks on linear algebra and MP3 will be presented at the even.

Program of the Linear Algebra Day
Starting with Two Matrices (English)
Prof. Gilbert Strang, MIT
The talk is intended for teachers and students. The audience must be prepared to see, or rediscover purportedly known facts in a refreshing new light. Prof. Strang demonstrates how a careful choice of simple, introductory examples can help to teach the major precepts of linear algebra, such as linear independence, without any of the notorious obscurity that impairs our view of the beauty of linear algebra. The talk is in English.

MP3 verstehen (German)
Prof. Martin Ruckert, University of Munich
MP3 is a technology that it would be hard to imagine every day life without. Despite this, many people are unaware of how MP3 works. This talk reveals the mathematical principles of MP3, which are surprisingly simply, thus supporting fundamental understanding of this and similar technologies. The talk is in German. |

Lineare Algebra lernen mit Mathematica (German)
Prof. Manfred Gruber, University of Munich
Very few first year students have previous experience of the concepts of linear algebra. This deficit is removed in exercises that accompany the "Linear Algebra" lecture series. Students can learn how to use the computer algebra system Mathematica to model and solve tangible problems in the language of vectors and matrices. The talk shows typical examples from the various phases of the series of exercises. The talk is in German. |

Linear Algebra as and Introduction to Mathematics (English)
Prof. H.-J. Schneider, Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich
Traditionally at german universities Linear Algebra is one of the main
courses for students in the first year. After a historical survey on
classical books on Linear Algebra I will describe the program in Linear
Algebra including courses on programming and numerics of the Bachelor in
Mathematics at the LMU. In Linear Algebra the students will learn the
axiomatic method and the abstract concepts of mathematics, the basic
methods of proof and the fundamental techniques of Linear Algebra with
applications in algebra, number theory, analysis, geometry, numerics and
physics. The talk is in English. |

The Many Applications of Linear Algebra (English)
Prof. Gilbert Strang, MIT
This talk introduces listeners to the more arcane concepts of linear algebra such as singular value decomposition. Singular value decomposition of matrices plays a central role in many fields of application today. Professor Strang shows how easy it is to understand the concept if the mathematical foundations have been laid down correctly. The foundations here are the ?four fundamental subspaces?, a didactic concept propagated by Professor Strang, on which the "MIT OpenCourseWare" online courses and his textbooks are built. The talk is in English. |
